RV Satellite Internet - Travel And Stay Connected

To have high speed internet while you are living the RV life, you will need RV satellite internet. Find out more below.

It is so great to be able to travel and see the sights from the comforting surroundings of your own RV. You have everything you could possibly need or want within easy reach. Everything except internet access that is. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that you can now have that too. With an RV satellite internet service, you can bring the internet with you.

For many of us, living without internet access is a real problem even when we're having a great time travelling. We use the internet for so many things, like staying in touch with members of our family or close friends, doing on-line banking, and of course just plain surfing the internet. So when we don’t have it, we really miss it.

Previously when travelling in a recreational vehicle, it was necessary to pick a campground that offered internet access, or try to find a WiFi hotspot. That’s all changed now with the growing availability of RV satellite internet.

With a satellite internet system, you can have internet access almost anywhere you travel. Most of these systems work by using small dish antennas either mounted on your RV or as a separate unit. In either case, both will give you high speed access when you are stopped.

Here’s how it works. The dish uses GPS technology to find and then lock onto the actual satellite which gives you the internet connection.

There are two basic types of units available: automatic roof mounted and manually mounted tripod units. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Automatic Roof Mounted RV Satellite System

An automatic RV satellite system is permanently fixed to the roof. These systems automatically go into the “stow” position when the GPS senses that the vehicle is moving. This is to protect the unit from damage from the wind while the RV is in motion.

You can automatically activate the “stow” button even if you are parked in case you don’t want your dish up during inclement weather.

An automatic unit is quite a bit more expensive than a manual tripod type of unit. But you are paying for the convenience of basically pushing a button and having your internet dish up and ready.

RV Satellite Tripod Unit

You will need a good amount of space to store an RV satellite tripod unit during transport because it is not small. It has to be set up and connected whenever you want to use it. This does take some time.

It’s probably not practical if you want to quickly check your email during a rest stop, but would be a good alternative if you were set up in an area for a period of time.

One advantage of a tripod unit over a permanent roof top unit is its flexibility. Since you need to have a clear view of the southern sky in order for your RV satellite internet to work, with a tripod you have the ability to move it to an open space. Moving a tripod is a lot easier than moving a big motorhome.

With RV satellite internet, you can now travel and stay connected. It’s like having the best of both worlds: the convenience of home, with the fun of travel.
