High Speed Satellite Internet Service – Your Questions Answered - Part 2
In Part 2, we look at the answers to other frequently asked questions about high speed satellite
internet service.
5. Can I network the satellite connection so it's possible to use it with more than one computer in my
home?
Networking of satellite systems works the same way as with any other type of system. By using a router you can
distribute the connection wirelessly to other computers in your home or business network.
6. How much equipment is needed for me to have internet via satellite?
Although high speed satellite internet service looks pretty complex, to have access you really only need two
different pieces of equipment.
Inside your home you will need a satellite modem that connects to the dish with a coaxial cable. The modem
connects to your computer with an Ethernet cable or wireless router. Outside your home you will have the actual
dish that will collect and then transmit the signal both to and from the satellite.
7. How much maintenance is required?
There is little in the way of maintenance that is required. Service issues are usually handled by telephone with
highly trained technicians. Rarely would an on-site service call be needed as the outside equipment is designed to
stand up to harsh weather conditions.
Any problems with inside equipment can usually be diagnosed by the technician via his connection with your
computer. Then it's an easy matter of simply disconnecting the faulty part and reconnecting it. The service
technician can walk you through this and then complete the set-up from his end.
8. Are there any advantages to getting satellite internet if I live in an urban area?
Not really. If you live in an urban area, you will probably want to take advantage of cable or DSL internet if
it's available, because it's both faster and cheaper than satellite internet.
9. Can I do the satellite installation myself?
No you can't. You have to get these satellite dishes professionally installed for a couple of reasons. First,
the dish has to be linked to the right satellite. This requires certain equipment as well as a trained technician.
Second, The FCC mandates that systems that send or receive signals from satellites be installed by
professionals.
